What is GEO? Optimising for generative AI
How do generative assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini recommend businesses? The basics of Generative Engine Optimization.
· 1 min read · Kieosa Editorial
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the set of practices that help generative AI models recognise your brand, describe it accurately and recommend it when answering a question.
How it differs from AEO
AEO aims to be the source of an answer. GEO aims to be represented correctly in the model's knowledge and in the text it generates. In practice both rest on the same foundation: reliable, structured and consistent data.
Being recognised as an entity
Models understand the world through entities and the relationships between them. For your business to be recognised as an entity, your name, category, location and official profiles (sameAs) must be clearly linked.
How should content be written?
- Use verifiable facts instead of exaggerated advertising language.
- Repeat the business name and city in each paragraph so blocks still make sense out of context.
- State your services, price range and opening hours clearly.
